William Gilby of Swaffham Prior, England United Kingdom was born in 1811 in Swaffham Prior, and had a brother John Gilby. William Gilby died at age 68 years old in 1879 in Swaffham Prior.
William first born son of William Gilby and Mary nee Harrison. He was baptised on 23 Jun 1811 in Wicken, Cambridgeshire. He was a farm labourer in the Great Swaffham area for many years. William became the Farm Bailiff in Swaffham Prior in the 1860's. He first married Ann Nixon on the 5 October 1828 in Swaffham Prior Parish Church. William and Ann nee Nixon had children William born 1830, Thomas born 1832, Maryann 1835, Henry 1839, Emma Maria 1842, Sarah Ann 1844 and George 1847. Ann died in 1859.
He then married widow Ann Heffer nee Hunt and they had Emma born 1862 and Henry Thomas born 1863.
In 1841 and 1851 William was living at Fens in Swaffham Prior, in 1861 at Swaffham Terrace, in 1871 High Street, Fen Lane, Swaffham Prior. William died 1879 and is buried on the 2nd May 1879 in St. Mary's Parish Churchyard.

Elizabeth Cray of Soham, England United Kingdom was born in 1826 in Soham, and died at age 77 years old in 1903 in Bracknell.
Elizabeth daughter of John Cray and Frances Haylock. Her siblings were Fanny born 1813, Philip born 1815, Sarah born 1817, Marianne born 1822, John born @ 1824, Elizabeth born @ 1825, Martha born @ 1827 and Charlotte born @ 1829, Sussannah born 1832 in Soham. Elizabeth, Martha and Charlotte were baptised all on the same day on 28 November 1829. John was a Shoemaker in Soham.
Elizabeth became a domestic servant, working in Swaffham Prior when she married John Gilby the Banns for their marriage were read on the 3rd, 10th and 17th December. Their marriage took place on the 25 December 1843 in St. Mary's Parish Church, Swaffham Prior, Cambridgeshire.
She and John were living in Reach, Camb when she gave birth to Maryanne in 1844, sadly losing her in 1846. They named two other babies Mary Ann, sadly the girls never made it to adulthood.
After the death of her husband, Elizabeth added Mary to her name and lived with her youngest daughter and her family in Bracknell. Elizabeth died in 1903 in Bracknell. Then Ada, her husband and children immigrated to Australia.

John Gilby of Swaffham Prior, England United Kingdom was born in 1824 in Swaffham Bulbeck, and died at age 58 years old in 1882 in Bullbrook.
John son of William Gilby and Mary nee Harrison of Swaffham Prior Fen, Cambridgeshire. John married Elizabeth Cray of Soham, Cambridgeshire on the 25 December 1843 in Swaffham Prior. John was a farm labourer working around the Swaffham area. Children of John and Elizabeth were Maryanne born 1844 in Reach. She died aged 2years. Emily born 1845, William 1847, Ann Frances 1850 Mary Elizabeth 1851, Mary Ann born 1854-1855, Mary Ann born 1855 died 1875.
John and Elizabeth decided to leave Cambridgeshire and moved south to Berkshire. To the village of Binfield. Here John 1858 and Sarah 1860 died 1862. Finally Ada was born 1867 in Warfield. They lived finally in Bullbrook, Bracknell, Berkshire. John became a Carter driving the wagons and coaches. He often took one of his children with him when driving around. In 1835 he was gifted a bible. Most of the children's dates of birth were recorded in the bible. It was sent to Australia with Ada Gilby Brooks. One of her daughters, gifted the bible to Arthur's youngest son. He allowed me to copy the writing.

John Gilby of Binfield, England United Kingdom was born on February 15, 1858 in Binfield to John Gilby and Elizabeth Cray. John Gilby died at age 87 years old on August 7, 1945 in Gayndah, QLD Australia.
John son of John Gilby 1824-1882 and Mary Harrison 1826-1903. He was the eighth child of ten. His father was a labourer but later took on work as a Carter, driving the big wagons. John did attend school, he was highly educated. He left home at the age of seventeen boarding a Ship called the Flying Cloud and arrived in Brisbane, Qld. He headed for Ipswich where he took up a trade building houses. After a number of years the lore of mining took him to the Herberton area. He mined himself in the many rivers. In 1886 he purchased farm land at Flaggy Creek. In 1892 he married a young Danish immigrant, Anna Katrina Hall from N***** Creek. (Now called Wondelca).
John with a help from a neighbour began clearing the land. He told how he and his mate would be working the big cross cut saw. Rifle always at hand because they would be stalked ready to be speared. John knew his cousin had come to Victoria. John traveled down on horseback in a small group. The Victorian Police pulled them up, thinking at first if they were part of the Kelly gang.
John and Anna had six children born in the Herberton area. Jack 1892-1945, Annie Elizabeth 1893-1930, William 1894-1894, David Henry 1895-1960, Arthur Albert 1898-1957, Ada 1899-1939. Sometime in the late 1890’s, John had money and took his wife and children back to England to visit his mother.
On returning he sold his farm and moved down to Biggenden. Waiting for the government to open Ban Ban Station for selection. Their home was at Spring Hill. All except Jack were enrolled in the Biggenden Mine School. Here Thomas 1901-1933, Ivy May 1904-1944 and Lillian Emily 1906-194)7 were born. Finally Ban Ban opened and John was the first selector. He also selected land across the road for his youngest sister Ada and her Husband Lewis Brooks. The new town was called Coalstoun Lakes. In 1911 his daughter Elsie Jane 1911-1982 (The first white child born in the area. Finally their last son Henry Norman 1913-1977 was born. As his sons grew up, John selected more land for his sons.
John was a tough man, he was able to find water with a diving rod. Acknowledged by Qld’s best. Once he was high up on the windmill when he saw his grandsons being chased by the local bullies. John slid down to the ground and took on the bullies who ran away. John lost his wife in 1929 and sadly one by one his children also died before him. When old age made life hard, his son Arthur brought him to live with his family in Gayndah. In July 1945 his first born son died in Brisbane Hospital. Arthur had been there with Jack. Within a week John himself passed away. He was about 87 years old.
