John Sarppo 1867 - 1948

John Sarppo was born in December 1867 to Anna Sarppo. He was in a relationship with Valpuri Sarppo, and had children Ida Olivia Hanka, Amelia Gustava Baier, Emil Jacob Sarppo, Eino Arvid Sarppo, Hilma Ester Lavaque, and Walter Leonard Sarppo. John Sarppo died at age 80 years old in June 1948.

In 1867, in the year that John Sarppo was born, on March 30th, Alaska was bought by the US from Russia for $7.2 million dollars, which worked out to about 2 cents per acre. The newspapers called it "Seward's Folly" because United States Secretary of State William H. Seward negotiated the purchase and Alaska was seen as frozen, useless land.
