John Sarppo 1867 - 1948

John Sarppo was born in December 1867 to Anna Sarppo. He was in a relationship with Valpuri Sarppo, and had children Ida Olivia Hanka, Amelia Gustava Baier, Emil Jacob Sarppo, Eino Arvid Sarppo, Hilma Ester Lavaque, and Walter Leonard Sarppo. John Sarppo died at age 80 years old in June 1948.

In 1867, in the year that John Sarppo was born, on January 8th, African-American men were given the right to vote in the District of Columbia when Congress overrode President Andrew Johnson's veto. This was the first place in the U.S. to give African Americans the right to vote.

In 1873, at the age of just 6 years old, John was alive when on September 18th, the New York stock market crash - due to the failure of a number of banks - began the Panic of 1873. After the boom following the Civil War, the Coinage Act of 1873 and other factors led to the market crash. Thus began the "Long Depression" - also called the "Great Depression" until the 1930's.
