John Stephen Stebbins 1844 - 1926

John Stephen Stebbins was born on October 26, 1844 in Hobart Town, TAS Australia to Stephen John Stebbins and Mary Anne Stebbins ( Oakley, and had a brother James Stebbins. He married Eleanor Summers (Binger) Stebbins, and had children Catherine Olivia (Stebbins) Sparkman, Alfred Franklin Stebbins, Rev. Ivan Stanley Stebbins, Willoughby Austin Stebbins, Roland Ira Christian Stebbins, and Raymond Ormsby Stebbins. John Stebbins died at age 82 years old in 1926.

In 1844, in the year that John Stephen Stebbins was born, in June and July, the "Great Flood of 1844" occurred on the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers - the largest flood recorded in that area. The population in the area was sparse at the time, though, so the flood didn't have a lot of economic impact. The biggest loss was to the Wyandot Indians - 100 people died from diseases caused by the flood.

"Criminals, the insane, or any person unable to take care of him or herself" were not allowed in the U.S. according to the Act. It also imposed a "head tax" on non-citizens entering the U.S.
