    Joseph Henry Shafer lived in Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, and Kansas before settling down in Alva, Woods county Oklahoma. He was a veteran of the U.S. Civil War where he served as a drummer boy. Joseph was married to Mary Ruhannah Moore (1844-1921) until her passing and the couple had numerous sons and daughters. He re-married after his wife's death to Nancy Elizabeth Barnes (1849-1948). At the time of Joseph's passing on February 1st 1937, his obituary states that he was the only Civil war veteran in Woods County Oklahoma.

    Born in Tiffin, Seneca county, Ohio, Joseph Shafer lived in Washington Brown county Indiana by 1860, then in Hamer Highland Ohio by 1863. After serving in the U.S. Civil War he married Mary Ruhannah Moore in Quincy, Adams county, Iowa where the couple lived at least through 1870. In 1880 he lived in Osborne Kansas, and then by 1890 lived in Terre Haute, Champaign county, Ohio. In 1910 he moved from Champaign to Alva, Woods county, Oklahoma where he stayed until his passing in 1937.

    Joseph served in the 134th Ohio Infantry during the U.S. Civil War. There is a photo of him as a drummer boy - see Joseph Henry Shafer. He enlisted on May 2nd 1864 and was discharged after 3 months and 25 days on August 31st 1864. On September 9th 1889 he filed in Ohio to receive his military pension.

    Joseph Henry Shafer was born in Tiffin Ohio to Joseph Shafer (1797-1878) and Elizabeth Tarr (1826-1856) and had a sister Julianna born in 1849. While living in Terre Haute Champaign Ohio Joseph enlisted in the 134th Ohio Infantry on May 2nd 1864 and was discharged after 3 months and 25 days on August 31st 1864. He married Mary Ruhannah Moore (1844-1921) on August 19th 1867 in Quincy, Adams county Iowa and they had children Stella (1868-1953), Jessie Ellsworth (1869-1943), Bertha (1872-1876), Josephine "Josie" Candace Shafer (1872-1949), Martha (1874-1876), Orlando Mitchell (1876-1933), Emmert (1878-1961), Ernest (1878-1943), James Hamilton (1882-1946) and Mae Elizabeth Shafer (1884-1968). Joseph's wife Mary passed away on August 7th 1921 while the couple were living in Alva Oklahoma. Two years later Joseph married Nancy Elizabeth Barnes (1849-1948) on January 14th 1923.

    SERVICES SET FOR J.H. SHAFER Funeral services for Joseph Henry Shafer, 90, Civil war veteran who died yesterday morning, will be held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon in the United Brethren church with Rev. A. Leslie Williams, pastor, officiating. A military service will be presented at the funeral. Burial will be in the A. O. U. W. cemetery with the Stiles-Howerton Funeral home in charge. Mr. Shafer, until his death, was the only Civil war veteran in the county. He was born July 7, 1846, in Columbus, Ohio. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Nancy Barnes Shafer, children grandchildren and stepchildren. - The Alva Review-Courier February 2nd 1937

J. Henry Shafer entered the Civil War at the age of 15 as a drummer boy. This photo shows him with his drumsticks which look like they are made out of small tree branches. He enlisted with the Iowa Volunteers 4th Infantry and served for the entire war.

Amazing Civil War drummer boy photo...
I just happened to see this photo (Joseph Henry Shafer) of Joseph as a drummer boy in the Civil War and added some details I could find to help tell his story.

He had so many children...I hope some of his descendants add to this page to help share his story.
