Joshua Chamberlain's Biography
Introduction
Before the U.S. Civil War he was a college professor living in Brunswick Maine. He served in Maine's 20th under Colonel Adelbert Ames and was present with his regiment during the Battles of Antietam and Fredericksburg. He was promoted to Colonel and assumed command of the unit after the Battle of Chancellorsville, leading with distinction during the Gettysburg Campaign.
On the second day during the battle of Gettysburg (July 2nd 1863) he commanded the 20th Maine in its famous defense of Little Round Top. His unit, posted as left flank of the Union Army, fended off repeated Confederate attacks throughout the day, and broke the Confederate lines by a bayonet charge ordered and led by Col. Chamberlain. His actions on that day earned him a Medal of Honor and he assumed command of a brigade in August 1863 where he participated in the Battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor. His troops were among the first to reach Petersburg, where he was severely wounded and was put out of action for months.

In 1828, in the year that Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain was born, on September 17th, a typhoon - called the Siebold Typhoon because German physician Philipp Franz von Siebold was there and took measurements during the storm - killed over 14,000 people in Kyūshū, Japan. It was the greatest number of deaths in any storm in Japan.
In 1845, when he was 17 years old, on December 29th, Texas was admitted as the 28th state. Formerly part of Mexico, then an independent Republic, Texas consisted mainly of American settlers - English speaking - in the north and former Mexican citizens - Spanish speaking - in the south and west when admitted to the Union.
In 1895, by the time he was 67 years old, on May 18th, Italy's first motor race was held. The race was 58 miles long - from Turin to Asti and back. Five cars started but only three completed the race. It was won by Simone Federman who drove a Daimler Omnibus - his average speed was 9.6 mph.
In 1908, by the time he was 80 years old, President Theodore Roosevelt held the White House Conservation Conference, which lead to the establishment of the National Conservation Commission. Preparing the first inventory of the United State's natural resources, the commission was divided into four parts: water, forests, lands, and minerals.
In 1914, in the year of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain's passing, in June, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated by a Yugoslavian national. Austria-Hungary delivered an ultimatum to Serbia. Other major powers took sides - and World War I began: Austria declared war on Serbia; Germany on Russia and France; Britain on Germany . . . and on it went until most of the world was embroiled in the war.
