In 1916, at the age of only 14 years old, Julia was alive when the Battle of Verdun was fought from February through December. It was the largest and longest battle of World War I, lasting 303 days. The original estimates were 714,231 casualties - 377,231 French and 337,000 German, an average of 70,000 casualties a month. Current estimates are even larger. The Battle of the Somme was also fought from July through September of the same year. Original estimates were 485,000 British and French casualties and 630,000 German casualties.

Graceful Fashion - Popular Clothing in the 1900s
Skirts skimming the ground often with trains, high collars, big hats with lots of feathers - sometimes even with whole stuffed birds, ribbons, and flowers, the last heyday for corsets, and the rise of designer houses. 1900 through 1909 started with a continuation of the 1800's and lead to the great profile changes of the 1910's. Women's shoes had pointed toes and there was a shoe for every occasion including Oxfords, evening slippers, and boots. Gibson girl hair was all the rage, and the biggest change for men was with curled mustaches. Discover the fashion of the early 1900's.
