Leland Carl Gehrke was born on January 7, 1917 in Ramona, Marion Co County, KS to Carl John August Gehrke and Sophia Frederika (Bruckner) Gehrke, and had siblings Arthur Gustav Gehrke, Paul Edward Gehrke, Oscar Lewis Gehrke, Harvey Herman Gehrke, Edwin Bernard Gehrke, Lowell E Gehrke, Lowell Eugene Gehrke, and Juanita Sophia (Gehrke) Tousignant. Leland Gehrke died at age 27 years old on November 22, 1944 at Island of Leyte in Phillippines, and was buried on March 5, 1949 at Sunset Hill Cemetery in Herington, Dickinson Co County.

    Leland was educated in Lyon Valley Rural School. Graduated from Lyon Valley Rural School with the Class of 1931.
  • Military Service

    Pfc. Leland Carl Gehrke Entered Service Feb. 9, 1942, at Ft. Leavenworth Kansas, and entered training at Camp Wolters, Texas, Feb. 12, 1942 Transferred May 24, 1942 to Ft. McDowell, Angel Island, California. Sailed June 1, 1942 for the Hawaiian Islands. Served in Australia and New Guinea until November 1, 1944, at which time he was transferred to the Philippine Islands. The last word received from him was his letter dated November 3, 1944, written from Leyte, while serving under General MacArthur. A War Department message dated December 30, 1944 states: "The Secretary of War asks that I assure you of his deep sympathy in the loss of your son, Private First Class Leland C. Gehrke. Report received states he died Twenty-Two November, on Leyte, as a result of wounds received in action."

In 1920, he was merely 3 years old when in September, a bomb exploded in the J.P. Morgan bank building in New York City, killing 30 people immediately - 8 later died due to their injuries - and injuring another 200. Killing more people than the 1910 bombing of the LA Times (the deadliest terrorist act up until then), no one took responsibility and the perpetrators were never found. Italian anarchists were suspected of the bombing.
