About Lila

Introduction

Lila Hovietz Carter, my mother, was loving, beautiful, classy, giving, straight forward, she spoke her Southern Paiute language fluently, she never hesitated to share her traditional heritage and storytelling. She absolutely loved her daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She served on tribal council, she loved playing hand games, koon-can (Indigenous card game) video poker and bingo, which she played with her lucky beaded dobber, a gift given to her by my sister Laurieta Carter. My mother was 1 of 2 LV Paiute elders left that spoke Southern Paiute fluently. Sadly they’ve both passed away. We love and miss you everyday mom!

1929 - 2016 World Events

Refresh this page to see various historical events that occurred during Lila's lifetime.

In 1929, in the year that Lila Hovietz Carter was born, on March 4th, Herbert Hoover became the 31st President of the United States. Early in his presidency, the October stock market crash - "Black Tuesday" - occurred, which lead to the Great Depression. None of his economic policies were able to make a dent in the Depression. This lead to one term and the election of Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt winning the 1933 election in a landslide.

In 1931, by the time she was only 2 years old, in March, “The Star Spangled Banner” officially became the national anthem by congressional resolution. Other songs had previously been used - among them, "My Country, 'Tis of Thee", "God Bless America", and "America the Beautiful". There was fierce debate about making "The Star Spangled Banner" the national anthem - Southerners and veterans organizations supported it, pacifists and educators opposed it.

In 1944, when she was only 15 years old, on June 22nd, the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944, called the G.I. Bill, was signed into law, pushed through by the veteran's organizations. Benefits provided for veterans to return to school (high school, vocational school, or college), obtain low interest home mortgages and low interest business loans, and (if needed) one year of unemployment insurance. Since most returning vets immediately found work, less than 20% of the unemployment benefits were distributed.

In 1965, by the time she was 36 years old, on March 8th, the first US combat troops arrived in Vietnam. The 3500 Marines joined 23,000 "advisors" already in South Vietnam. By the end of the year, 190,000 American soldiers were in the country.

In 1983, she was 54 years old when on August 30th, the Soviet Union claimed that a South Korean Boeing 747 jetliner (Flight 007), bound for Seoul from New York City, had strayed into Soviet airspace. Saying that they believed it to be a U.S. spy plane, the passenger jet was shot down by a Soviet SU-15 fighter - after it had tracked the airliner for two hours. All 269 passengers (including a U.S. Representative from Georgia) and crew were killed.
