People we remember
Biographies are where we share about family & friends to connect with others who remember them.

Anthiony Gentile:
My spiritual sister - I got to know Mirella when I was 16 (1961).
As an only child for 15 years I had always wanted a sister. Mirella to me was the perfect sister. we lost touch over many years an caught later in life when I travelled through the US and visited Mirella and Paul.
A wonderful memory was when the three of us went to an amusement park in San Francisco. Mirella and Paul as I was were unafraid of whatever ride we went on.
I visited Mirella and Paul a number of times over the years and was witness to her illness.
She will always remain in my memory as the sister that I wished I had. Paul, looked after her to the end, and for that he has my eternal gratitude.
Tony Gentile
Jack Day:
I was thinking about you today - I met Tom in Minneapolis in 1986. He was one of the first people I met and he took me under his arm as a little brother. We bowled and played softball together and at one point lived in the same apartment. We would have brunch almost every Saturday. He’d say I’ll bring the toast you bring the eggs and bacon. Think I got the short end of the deal, but it was all worth it. When Tom got sick he never told me. I spoke with his best friend Mike Burby around thanksgiving 1990 who said he would be away and would I want to have thanksgiving dinner with Tom. I jumped on that opportunity. I called Tom and asked if he wanted to spend thanksgiving with me. He said of course. “You’ll be bringing the turkey and fixings” he asked. Of course I said. He said he provided the peas I think. lol. We had dinner and that’s when he told me he had AIDS. I said I knew and then we talked about our past and our friendship over the years. That was the last time I saw Tom. I miss him very much to this day. He was the big brother I never had. I am now 64 and can’t believe he didn’t have an obituary. Tom was tall, smart, worked for Principle Financial Group, played softball, bowled, played cards at the Gay 90’s upstairs and would give you the shirt off his back. He was the most together person I’ve ever known. I’m sorry his passing was kept a secret by his family. They should have been proud of him. I was he kept me safe and I’m negative today because he acted as my big brother.
Love you and miss you Tom…Jack Day
LEONE TURNER:
Always there - Osias, the name given at birth but always called BUDDY! My big Brother who was always there for me. I have so many memories of him - one being I was hanging out on the corner with friends and he came over to me and told me to go upstairs as he heard that a gang was coming into the neighborhood. I do not remember if I listened to him or not. I always looked up to him and how I wish he was still here! Love ya so much & miss you!!
Justin Johnson:
Grandmother - I’m a one of Lillian’s grandchildren. I have only very few memories of my grandma. But I do remember being under her everyday. Always wanting some of her coffee, touching the gas stove. We ate pecans all the time from the tree in the backyard. I wish she was here for me to talk to sometimes. To watch me grow to become a father myself.

Joseph Smith:
Freeman was my pawpaw. Last HOORAH - He worked up until the day he left this earth. The nearest hospital was about 25-30miles away. I had came down to help a cousin move her things and he saw me.
PULLS UP
PAWPAW: I need you to come and take me and Earl(Grandma) to the hospital.
Me: Yes sir I can hurry and get this off my truck.
PAWPAW: No time come we gotta go.
Me: Scared as all get out for my grandma. Jumps in his van and drive to the house.
PAWPAW: Gets out and goes in then comes right back out. She said she not going lets go.
Me: Even more confused he not showing one sign of pain. Take off driving normal.
PAWPAW: Off the rock rd now. Come on lets go.
Me: Looking at him closely now I see this huge lump like in his chest to stomach area I speed up but curves are coming I gotta maintan the road. I get off the gas for curve then stomp it because hes still up but not in his riding postion.(iykyk) The van jerks and starts to lose power.
PAWPAW: Whats goin on
Me: It turned off. Close to st charles was going to coast to the gas station for help.
PAWPAW: Pull over and pop the hood.
Me: Yes sir
PAWPAW: Grab that stick from the back. Hold up the hood. 2-5 minutes under the hood. He say go try it.
Me: cranks up. Picture this he climbed all the way up in the hood to put on or reset whatever it was. I get back out to get the stick hes down with the stick and closing the hood.
PAWPAW: Lets go. Drive
Me: I thought I was in a corvette the way I was moving passing people getting on down.
PAWPAW: He jumps out and walks in the hospital tells the lady whats going on she jumps up grabs a chair and take him to the back.
Nurse: Do you have his meds
Me: No maam. I didnt even know I was taking him to the dr until we was getting ready to back out.
I called who could help with all that then they said they was taking him to little rock and somebody was on the way to ride. I was to go back and head to the airport my aunt and uncles was on they way. Not ever imagining that would be my last time talking to him. So much more I wouldve said or did
Dee Rupenhoff:
Rose and Tony Zagarino - Rose is my grandmother. She worked in Millinery before marrying Anthony Zagarino. Fun Fact: Rose and Tony had the same birthday---September 24. He was born in 1910 and she was born in 1911. They had 4 daughters. She did beautiful knitting, sewing, and crocheting. Grandpa Tony loved baseball and was handy at building and fixing things.
Karen Mullenhoff Rupert (Judith Zagarino)

Kelli Brown:
I knew Rachel for many years, we went back to our early twenties and shared memories as coworkers and friends. She was a really good Hairdresser and could work magic along with the fun!
She was a proud mother and her son's are handsome and nice men.
She lived her life with a caring and open mind, she was a dog and animal lover, and always had room for a fur baby in need. The love in her heart was obvious and friendship and family were important to her.
I will miss my friend and I know we will see each again. ❤️🙏
Suma Fiame:
My name Suma Fiame. My oldest sister Sina was married to Pono and their son Wallace Kahuhu. I moved in with them when i was in Elementary from American Samoa. We were living in Waianae at Pokai Bay apartments 4th floor facing the beach side. I attended Waianae intermediate school and graduated there. Pono played a special role in my life as a father. He was a great father, hard working and loves to get together with his siblings and Ohana. He loves my sister Sina so much and their baby son Wallace. Pono worked at Parks and recreation. After work he would love to take us at the beach and hangout and play his ukulele, holoholo with friends too. Pono's Mom & Dad were still alive at the time. They live right next to Waianae elementary school. We would also go by and see Grandma & Grandpa and sometimes meet with Auntie's and cousins there. We later moved to Nanakuli after a horrible Hurricane Eva with Auntie D.D for a short time. Auntie D.D worked at Paradise Cove were they film Magnum P.I. We later moved to Makaha in the back of Cornetts shopping center across from Makaha Beach. We raised a pig named Suka and a dog named Rocky. Every time we go to town either we take my sisters Old skool Cadillac or Pop's 4 door flatbed six wheeler with rails and hydraulic liftgate we would always take our Suka and Rocky with us. They love sitting next to the windows. We visited my Unko Pili and family down town and Auntie Surita & Unko Peter Bartley and cousins in Kalihi Valley. I later moved to Kalihi and attended Dole intermediate for a short time and back to Waianae.. Aunty Surita & family decided to move with us to Waianae. We left Makaha to Waianae Valley at Pop's family land with our Bartley family and raised our Pets... Rabbits and bigs there.
Don Banfield:
She was my great grandmother - January 23rd, 2025
I just discovered this website Ancient Faces, I actually was searching for the Kirner family in Marin County CA. Today is actually the anniversary of the passing of Mae's daughter, Blanche Kirner Schieck, who passed in January 1981. I knew Mae as one of my two living great grandparents up to the time I was 9 and 13 years old. Mae was my mother's maternal grandmother. Mae lived her early years in Iowa and married European emigrant Guy Kirner in the early 1900's and settled into San Rafael, CA. They had their only child Blanche in August 1906. Mae was a survivor of the 1906 earthquake and was pregnant with Blanche at the time. I'm sure there is more genealogy in family records than I have alone but if anyone would like to know more about Mae and other family, please contact me
