Trish Sanson: David's grandparents, David Sanson and Margaret Inglis were born in Berwickshire, Scotland. On the 4th October 1852, David and Margaret Sanson arrived in Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne on the Wanata. They sailed from the port at Liverpool, England on Thursday 10 June 1852 carrying 820 passengers with 796 of these, including David and Margaret, were assisted passengers. The journey to Australia was 97 days long and was not easy for the passengers on board this ship. The Wanata was a double-decked vessel that was inadequately ventilated which contributed to the spread of diseases such as typhus fever and whooping cough. When the Wanata arrived at Hobsons Bay on 17 September 1852, it flew a yellow flag indicating that sickness was present.
