Lucile M. (McLaughlin) Blocker was born on November 22, 1913 in South Dakota United States to George William McLaughlin and Myrtle Illa (Masteller) McLaughlin, and had siblings Arlene I Volmer and Chester. Lucile Blocker married Albert Fred Blocker, and died at age 89 years old on June 10, 2003.

    Lucile (McLaughlin) Blocker PRESHO - Lucile McLaughlin Blocker, 89, Presho, died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at Maryhouse Sub-Acute Care Center in Pierre. Survivors include two sons, Dennis Blocker, Brookings, and Delbert Blocker, Newcastle, Wyo.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Her husband, Albert Blocker, preceded her in death. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Isburg-Hofmeister Funeral Chapel in Presho. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 12, at United Methodist Church in Presho. Burial will be at Presho City Cemetery.

In 1913, in the year that Lucile was born, the 17th Amendment, establishing the direct election of U.S. Senators, was adopted. Previously, Senators were elected by state legislatures. As early as 1826, a call to elect senators through popular vote was championed and previous to the 17th amendment, two states had already changed their process. Governors are still able to appoint senators to vacant seats until an election can be held.

In 1920, when she was merely 7 years old, on January 1, over 6000 people were arrested and put in prison because they were suspected of being communists. . Many had to be released in a few weeks and only 3 guns were found in their homes. The U.S. Department of Justice "red hunt" netted thousands of "radicals" and suspected "communists" and aliens were deported. But the "hunt" ended after Attorney General Palmer forecast a massive radical uprising on May Day and the day passed without incident.
