Introduction

Marlene was the daughter of Elizabeth Nichols (nee Hoare). It is unclear if she was the daughter of her mothers first husband, a Mr Wright or second husband Arthur Alexander Nichols. She had siblings Fred Wright, Joan Wright, Shirley, Sandra Nichols, Rita Nichols and Arthur Alexander Terrence (Terry) Nichols. The family story is that Marlene and her sister Shirley died of illness during the war which was blamed on them sleeping on cold concrete in the London Underground during bombing in WW2. It is thought Marlene was the elder and Shirley the younger of the two as they were referred to as 'Marlene and Shirley' but it is unclear where they come in sibling succession.
