  • Introduction

Arthur Alexander Terrence Nichols was known as Terry. He was born at Tooting Bec Hospital to Arthur Alexander Nichols and Elizabeth Nichols (nee Hoare) and had a sister, Rita. Terry's mother had been previously married to a Mr Wright so Terry had older siblings Fred, Joan and Sandra. Terry also recounted that he had two other sisters, Marlene and Shirley who died during the war. He recalls coming home to find his house being bombed but said his sisters didnt die in bombing but they had got sick and died which he remembers being blamed on them having to sleep on cold concrete in the London Underground during bombing. Terry grew up in Battersea, London, England. He did 'The Knowledge" and became a London black cab driver and, at one stage, owned two cabs. He married Melita (Valerie Melita) Fawke on 3rd February 1962. They lived at the home of Melita's mother (Rosina Sophia Fawke (nee Phillips) at 11 Torrens Road, Brixton Hill, London England, where there first two children Leigh Sandra (28th May 1962) and Terry-Ann (29th June 1963) were born. Terry, Melita and their daughters moved out of London, first to Herne Bay where their son, Ashley Warwick (9th October 1966) was born and then to Gravesend where Grant Brockland (22 September 1967) was born. Terry, Melita and their four children migrated to Australia on the Fair Star in August 1968. They had three more children in Australia, Myles Garrick 29th May 1970, Austine Barclay 5th September 1974 and Alethea Blythe 18th December 1975 (some year dates approximate). Terry initially workied for his brother, Fred Wright in his factory in Frankston and the family lived in various locations in Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, Australia. Fred Wright and his wife, Margaret, had no children so there was no family around but Terry and Melita developed a close knit group of friends that were always visiting each other with their families and became known as 'uncle and 'auntie' to their children. Terry continued his interest in cars working in car sales for most of his working career. Terry and Melita moved to Queensland in the 1980s with their two youngest children where they later divorced. Terry was an amateur artist and enjoyed painting, copper relief and etching but particularly enjoyed sketching and later worked for a newspaper in Queensland creating hand drawn sketch content for black and white advertising. Terry died in Queensland. Arthur Alexander Terrence (Terry) Nichols is remember by name in his daughter Terry-Ann and her two children Hew Evan Nichols Davies (5th September 1991) and Adelaide Violet Nichols Davies (30 January 1993) as well as her grandson Connor Alexander Joseph Thompson (Leigh's son).
