Joan was the daughter of Elizabeth Nichols (nee Hoare) from a previous marriage to Mr Wright. She had a brother Fred Wright. Two other sisters, Marlene and Shirley died of illness during WW2 and she had half siblings Arthur Alexander Terrence (Terry) and Rita from his mother's marriage to Arthur Alexander Nichols.
