Mary Ann Harrap 1888 - 1925

Mary Ann (Harrap) Jones of Yarram, Wellington Shire County, VIC Australia was born in 1888 in Yarram to Edward Harrap Jr. and Sarah Hickey Harrap. She had siblings James Richard Harrap, Adelaide Madeline Harrap, Nellie Elizabeth Harrap, Ernest David Harrap, Emily May Harrap, Wilford Patrick Harrap, Caroline Margaret Harrap, Mabel Lillian Sarah Harrap, and William Harrap. She married Sydney Jones in 1907, and had a child Louisa Edith Jones. Mary Jones died at age 37 years old in 1925 in Yarram.

In 1888, in the year that Mary Ann Harrap was born, on July 25th, a court stenographer from Salt Lake City - Frank Edward McGurrin - decisively beat the competition in a typing contest in Ohio. He was supposedly the only person who used touch typing and is believed to have invented the method. Touch typing is ubiquitous now - but Frank's win is what convinced everyone that the method was good!
