Mary Gertrude (Gertie) She was born in Ireland and her mother was the town midwife and nurse. She married Thomas Kennedy and they had two children Hannah (my mother,) and Edward. Republicans they had to flee Passage West when the crown Soldiers came for them. One of my mother’s earliest memories, was being carried down the back steps by her dad while the soldiers were pounding on the front door yelling “Open up in the name of the king!” Gertie was a strong woman who lived thru the Victorian, Edwardian, Industrial Revolution and into modern day times. She immigrated to America with two small children, during the industrial revolution. Back when women were not educated she urged her daughter to go to school and earn a college degree. The family went through the great depression and food was always on the table. Summers were spent at the “tar beach” (apartment building roof where a cool evening breeze was felt,) along with the neighbors. When the children were grown, she went to work as a supplies coordinator at a NY Hospital. After 20 years she retired and then did the same job t another hospital. Retiring from that job, she then volunteered at a lical thrift shop for the next decade. She was born before electricity was in use and lived to see men walk on the moon.
