Mary Goforth died at age 99 years old on July 31, 2001 at Amarillo in Amarillo, and was buried on August 2, 2001 at Memorial Park Cemetery in Amarillo, Potter County.

    Amarillo Globe News on August 01, 2001. "M. Lois Goforth,99, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Polk Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Marty Hamrick officiating. Private family graveside services will be in Memorial Park Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mrs. Goforth was born Feb 19, 1902, in Throckmorton. She is the last survivor of nine siblings born to William P. and Maggie Davis. Mrs. Goforth attended West Texas Normal College in Canyon and received her teacher certificate. She later taught in Childress. She married Earl R. Goforth in Wellington on March 23, 1921. They moved to Amarillo in 1934. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl; and by two sons, Elmer and Richard. She was a Gold Star Mother and a daughter of the American Revolution. She was a member of Polk Street United Methodist Church for 67 years where she was an early member of the Vaughn-Selby Sunday School class and was active in Women's Circle groups. Survivors include a son, Don Goforth of Amarillo, two grandsons, Lance of Amarillo and Dan Neil of Redding, Calif.; a granddaughter, Susan of Redding; and three great grandchildren. The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, memorials be to Eva Goforth Scholarship Fund at Polk Street United Methodist Church 1401 S. Polk St., Amarillo, TX, 79101. The family will receive visitors at Schooler Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. today."

In 1938, she was 36 years old when on June 25th (a Saturday) the Fair Labor Standards Act was signed into law by President Roosevelt (along with 120 other bills). The Act banned oppressive child labor, set the minimum hourly wage at 25 cents, and established the maximum workweek at 44 hours. It faced a lot of opposition and in fighting for it, Roosevelt said "Do not let any calamity-howling executive with an income of $1,000 a day, ...tell you...that a wage of $11 a week is going to have a disastrous effect on all American industry."
