In 1862, in the year that Mathilda Jane "Jenny" Taylor Gregory was born, British citizen Anna Leonowens, a widow, accepted a job in Siam (now Thailand) to teach the children and wives of the King of Siam - he had 39 wives and concubines and 82 children. Taking her son with her and sending her daughter to England for schooling, she taught in Siam for 6 years - until the King died.

In 1876, on May 1st, Queen Victoria added the title Empress of India, a title held by British monarchs until 1948 - when India gained independence from the United Kingdom.

In 1955, on September 30th, movie star James Dean, 24, died in a car accident. He was headed in his new Porsche 550 to a race in Salinas California when, traveling at 85 mph, he collided with a 1950 Ford Tudor, also speeding, driven by a 23 year old college student. Dean died, his passenger and the other driver survived.

In 1999, on January 1st, the Euro became the new official single currency of the eurozone. It was used by Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Spain and has since spread in use. Daily, over 337 million Europeans use the euro.
