In 1831, in the year that Merriam Young was born, on January 1st, William Lloyd Garrison began publishing The Liberator, an antislavery newspaper, in Boston Massachusetts. Published until 1865, the paper was strongly abolitionist and advocated the "immediate and complete emancipation of all slaves".

In 1841, Merriam was only 10 years old when on March 4th, William Henry Harrison was inaugurated as the ninth President of the United States. On April 4th, President Harrison died of pneumonia, becoming the first President who died in office - as well as the American president with the shortest term ever served. Vice-President John Tyler immediately became the tenth President of the United States.
