Myrtle Elizabeth Thwaites of Queenscliff, Queenscliffe Borough County, VIC Australia was born in 1903 in Queenscliff to Alfred James Thwaites and Susannah Wiffen Thwaites. She had siblings Alfred John "Alf" Thwaites, James "Jim" Thwaites, Herbert "Bert" Thwaites, Leslie Thwaites, Thomas Thwaites, and Stanley Thwaites. Myrtle Thwaites married Charles Edgar Vagg in 1928, and died at age 77 years old in 1980.

In 1903, in the year that Myrtle Elizabeth Thwaites was born, the silent film, The Great Train Robbery opened. Although it was filmed in Milltown, New Jersey, it was a Western. Twelve minutes long, the film used a lot of innovative techniques - some scenes were hand colored and composite editing, on-location shooting, and frequent camera movement were used. Its budget was $150 (about $4000 currently) and was the most popular film until 1915 when Birth of a Nation was released.

In 1911, she was just 8 years old when the first Indianapolis 500 was run in May. Ray Harroun was the winner - he was an engineer and had retired from racing but he came back for this race. After the race, he retired for good. The purse was $27,550 - the largest offered up to that time - and Harroun received $10,000 for first place. His average time was 74.602 mph.
