Stanley Thwaites of Benalla, Benalla Rural City County, VIC Australia was born in 1899 in Queenscliff, Queenscliffe Borough County to Alfred James Thwaites and Susannah Wiffen Thwaites. He had siblings Alfred John "Alf" Thwaites, James "Jim" Thwaites, Herbert "Bert" Thwaites, Myrtle Elizabeth Thwaites, Leslie Thwaites, and Thomas Thwaites. Stanley Thwaites married Olive Murrish Boothey in 1922, and died at age 81 years old on September 25, 1981 in Benalla, Benalla Rural City County.

The chancellor of the Imperial Academy and a friend noticed, before they ground the bones, that they had writing. The bones had been used around the second millennium BC for divination.
