Nathaniel Bragg Riddle was born in 1862 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia United States to Nathaniel P Riddle and Permelia (Motley) Riddle, and had siblings John William Riddle, Martha E (Riddle) Giles, Edward Joseph Riddle, Nathan Riddle, Thomas Samuel Riddle, James P Riddle, Sarah "Sallie" Ann Riddle, and Columbia Riddle. Nathaniel Riddle died at age 38 years old in 1900.

In 1862, in the year that Nathaniel Bragg Riddle was born, on July 1st, the Bureau of Internal Revenue was created. Established to raise funds for the Civil War, income tax was supposed to be temporary and was allowed to expire 10 years later. The Internal Revenue Service was created in the early 20th century.

In 1877, he was only 15 years old when on July 14th, strikes and resulting riots began at the Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) Railroad. A sympathy strike and rioting began in Pittsburgh and a worker's rebellion began in St. Louis, then spread to other cities. 100 people were killed before the strikes ended when President Rutherford B. Hayes sent federal troops to each of the cities involved.
