Sarah "Sallie" Ann Riddle was born in May 1860 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia United States to Nathaniel P Riddle and Permelia (Motley) Riddle, and had siblings John William Riddle, Martha E (Riddle) Giles, Edward Joseph Riddle, Nathan Riddle, Thomas Samuel Riddle, James P Riddle, Nathaniel Bragg Riddle, and Columbia Riddle. Sarah "Sallie" Riddle died at age 37 years old in 1897.

In 1860, in the year that Sarah "Sallie" Ann Riddle was born, on February 26th, near Eureka California, white settlers attacked a tribe of Wiyot Indians on Indian Island. Over 60 women, children and older people died. Bret Harte - a writer and friend of Mark Twain - reported the news about the massacre to the papers in San Francisco.
