Nellie Ruth (Matthews) Cox was born on May 14, 1899 in Illinois United States to Newman Hamlin Matthews and Anna (Swanson) Matthews, and had siblings Herbert Leslie Matthews Sr, Mable Irene (Matthews) Reeder, Ralph Waldo Matthews, Carl Newman Matthews, Iva Lenore (Mathews) Denton, and Bernice Elizabeth (Matthews) Blase. Nellie Cox married Ralph Sidney Cox on August 19, 1922 in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana, and died at age 92 years old in May 1991 in Speedway, Marion County.

In 1899, in the year that Nellie Ruth (Matthews) Cox was born, the meaning of Chinese "oracle bones" was rediscovered. Farmers in China had been turning up the bones in their fields for generations but most often they were ground up and sold as medicine. The chancellor of the Imperial Academy and a friend noticed, before they ground the bones, that they had writing. The bones had been used around the second millennium BC for divination.

In 1924, Nellie was 25 years old when on January 21st, Vladimir Lenin, a leader of the Russian Revolution and the first leader of the Soviet Union died. He had survived two assassination attempts but had subsequent physical problems, suffering 3 strokes. He was in such great pain, it is said that he asked Stalin to poison him. The circumstances of his death are still disputed. He did oppose Stalin as the next leader - nonetheless, Stalin won a power struggle and ruled as a Soviet dictator until his death in 1953.
