  • Introduction

    Newell Justin Nelson was born in Jackson Wisconsin to Anton M. Nelson (1870-1930) and Anna Nelson (born 1868), and had three sisters Cassie Lorenza (born 1897), Ethel Elvina (1901-1985), and Ella M. Nelson (born 1904). Newell Nelson and Agnes Margaret Bersing (1900-1990) were married on December 26th 1923 in Blair Trempealeau County Wisconsin, and they had children Delbert A. Nelson (1927-1998), Newell Jay Nelson (1933-1999), and Paul. The wedding announcement of Newell and Agnes read: Newell J. Nelson Weds Agnes Bersing - Young Couple will Reside on Farm West of Blair. Newell J. Nelson and Miss Agnes Bersing were united in the Holy bonds of Matrimony at the Zion Lutheran parsonage Wednesday forenoon, December 26th, at 9:00 o'clock, Rev. A. J. Boe performing the ceremony. The bridal couple were attended by Miss Ethel Nelson, sister of the groom and Delbert Bersing, brother of the bride. The bridal couple left immediately afterwards for Minneapolis on their honeymoon. The groom is a progressive young farmer of Preston township and has a large circle of friends. The bride is well known hereabouts, having assisted with clerical work at the Benrud Bros. store here for several years. The many friends of the young couple wish them much happiness and extend congratulations, and the Press also wishes them abundance of prosperity in their journey through life. On their return here they will make their home on a farm west of Blair. Newell ended up farming for only a short while, he moved to Onalaska in 1927 and became a grocer in La Crosse and Onalaska for over 40 years.

In 1947 he moved to Tiny's Market, 6th and Johnson Street, which he operated for six years.

    The following appeared in The La Crosse Tribune in La Crosse Wisconsin on Thursday December 5th 1968: N. J. Nelson, Ex-Grocer, Died at 69 Newell J. Nelson Sr., 69, of 1023 Cameron Ave., a grocer in La Crosse and Onalaska for more than 40 years, died in a local hospital Wednesday morning, Dec. 4. Mr. Nelson owned and operated Nelson's IGA, 3109 State Road, for 13 years before retiring in 1967. He opened his first store in Onalaska in 1928. In 1947 he moved to Tiny's Market, 6th and Johnson Sts., which he operated for six years. He farmed in the Blair area until moving to Onalaska in 1927. He was born Fe. 2, 1899, near Taylor. Mr. Nelson was a past master of Onalaska Lodge 314 F. and A.M., and a member of Eau Claire Consistory and Zor Shrine of Madison, and Onalaska Chapter 249, Order of Eastern Star. He is survived by his widow, Agnes; three sons, Delbert A. of La Crosse, Newell Jr. and Paul A., both of West Bend; three sisters, Mrs. Julius Johnson of Blair, Mrs. Ethel Haugen of San Francisco, Calif., Ella Nelson of Madison; and six grandchildren. Services will be Saturday at 3 p.m. in Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. Rev. Norman Nelson will officiate. Burial will be in Onalaska Cemetery. Friends may call at the Dickinson Jackson Street Chapel Friday after 4 p.m. and at the church Saturday from 2 p.m. until the service. Onalaska Lodge 314 will have a Masonic service at 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
