    Services for Darrell Baker, 90, will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home with Rev. Weldon Hicks officiating. Burial will follow at Killeen City Cemetery. Baker died Oct. 10, 2005, at a local hospital. He was born July 12, 1915, in Killeen to the late Troy and Leo Baker. Baker was a graduate of Killeen High School and served in the Air Force. He was the manager of Fogles Auto Supply. Baker attended First Baptist Church and was a member of American Legion and the VFW. Survivors include his brother, Melvin Baker of Killeen. In 1915, in the year that Norris Darrell Baker was born, the Germans first used poison gas as a weapon at the second Battle of Ypres during World War I. While noxious gases had been used since ancient times, this was the first use of poisonous gas - in this case, lethal chlorine gas - in modern war. In 1945, at the age of 30 years old, Norris was alive when on August 15th, Imperial Japan announced its surrender. On September 2nd, a formal agreement of surrender was signed. Japan and nine other states signed the Japanese Instrument of Surrender in Tokyo Bay, calling for the return of all Allied prisoners of war and subordinating the authority of the emperor and the Japanese government to the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers. VJ (Victory in Japan) Day was celebrated in the United States on August 14th and 15th. World War II was over.
