Paul Munde Leake 1908 - 1983

Paul Munde Leake of New York, New York County, NY was born on October 23, 1908 in New York to Henry Sabin Leake and Bertha Von Hornamann Munde. He had siblings Henry Sabin Leake Jr., Quintard Leake, and Eleanore Leake. He married Seraphima Alice Seltzer, and had children Jonathan Leake and Paul Andrew Leake. Paul Leake died at age 74 years old on March 17, 1983 in New York, and was buried in March 1983 at Westlawn Cemetery in Williamstown, Berkshire County, MA.

    Paul served in the military during World War II. He was about medium height with a neck size leaner than 16 inches. From photos of him when he was in the service, in the opinion of this writer, his visible characteristics bear a similarity to the famed American writer, F. Scott Fitzgerald. He worked at the United Nations for awhile. He wed on Mar.9,1943 in N.Y.C. to Seraphima Alice Seltzer and had 2 sons. His relationship to this writer via Prof. Frederic Leake alone is half first cousin twice removed.

In 1908, in the year that Paul Munde Leake was born, President Theodore Roosevelt held the White House Conservation Conference, which lead to the establishment of the National Conservation Commission. Preparing the first inventory of the United State's natural resources, the commission was divided into four parts: water, forests, lands, and minerals.

In 1935, he was 27 years old when on September 8th, Louisiana Senator Huey Long was shot by Dr. Carl Weiss. Weiss was shot and killed immediately by Long's bodyguards - Long died two days later from his injuries. Long had received many death threats previously, as well as threats against his family. He was a powerful and controversial figure in Louisiana politics (and probably gained power through multiple criminal acts). His opponents became frustrated with their attempts to oust him and Dr. Weiss was the son-in-law of one of those opponents. His funeral was attended by 200,000 mourners.
