Introduction

I never met Portia as she died a year before I was born. As we were growing up we heard her mentioned many times. We have photos of her and in every one of them she looks kind of wild...her hair is a mess and her eyes are opened too wide. My daughter has a crush on her and says her personality comes shining through. She's right, there's something special about Portia. In the family photo of Asahel and his children, Portia looks angry and Jenny...I don't know, she looks wise? In a letter to Gigi, Jenny tells how Portia laid on the railroad tracks, a man saw her (was a train coming?) and pulled her off and later she said "I wish he hadn't". We were shocked when we read this. I don't think Jenny was making this up. As I remember Jenny, she was very soothing. I believe she cared for and protected her. They are buried together in the same grave and it's very moving to see the gravestone. I'm sad just thinking about it. Family secrets,everyone has them.
