Richard Bowler of Hobart, Tasmania County, TAS Australia was born in 1804 in England United Kingdom to Charlotte (Wilkins) Bowler and John Bowler. He had siblings John Bowler, Mary Bowler, Sarah Bowler, Elizabeth (Bowler) Cross, and Charlotte (Bowler) Hayes. Richard Bowler died at age 74 years old in 1878 at Bricksfield Pauper Depot in Hobart, TAS Australia, and was buried at Cornelian Bay.

  • Introduction

    At the age of 17, Richard was tried and convicted of attempted burglary at the Bucks Assizes. Along with fellow offender James White, he was subsequently reprieved and sent to Australia (Vandieman's Land) in 1821. He led an uneventful life, but learned to read and write in his new adopted country. You can read his letters here:

In 1804, in the year that Richard Bowler was born, on December 2nd, Napoleon was crowned as Emperor of France. It was a spectacular ceremony - even the Pope attended - and Napoleon and Josephine's garments were expensive and lavish. Napoleon lifted the crown to his own head, effectively naming himself Emperor. After the actual coronation, street musicians and peddlers entertained the crowds in the streets.

In 1844, at the age of 40 years old, Richard was alive when in June and July, the "Great Flood of 1844" occurred on the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers - the largest flood recorded in that area. The population in the area was sparse at the time, though, so the flood didn't have a lot of economic impact. The biggest loss was to the Wyandot Indians - 100 people died from diseases caused by the flood.
