Richard Charles Culph of Box Hill, Whitehorse City County, VIC Australia was born in 1909 in Musk Vale, Hepburn Shire County to William Henry Culph and Jane Maud (Bygrave) Culph. He had siblings Thomas Harold Culph, Edith Mabel Culph, Roy Culph, John Thomas Culph, William Henry Culph, Robert Edwin Culph, and Alfred Baden Culph. He married Kathleen Annie O'Meara in 1940, and had a child Ian John Culph. Richard Culph died at age 52 years old on July 3, 1962 in Box Hill, Whitehorse City County.

In 1909, in the year that Richard Charles Culph was born, William Howard Taft became the 27th President of the United States on March 4th. Previously Secretary of War, Judge on the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals, Solicitor General of the U.S., and Governor of both the Philippines and Cuba, Taft was the only President who went on to become Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

In 1926, he was 17 years old when on October 31st, Harry Houdini died in Michigan. Houdini was the most famed magician of his time and perhaps of all time, especially for his acts involving escapes - from handcuffs, straitjackets, chains, ropes slung from skyscrapers, and more. He was president of the Society of American Magicians and stringently upheld professional ethics. He died of complications from a ruptured appendix. Although he had received a blow to the area a couple of days previously, the connection between the blow and his appendicitis is disputed.
