    Richard was a loving father, husband, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother. Born August 21, 1931 in Bastress, PA, Rich would go on to marry the former Edith Lorraine Haire, whom is still living, and welcome his son, Lee Richard, into this world on July 25, 1952, and his daughter, Linda Marie, into this world on September 3, 1960. Linda would later precede him in death on Saturday October 1, 2011 at 5pm Eastern Time from cancer at the age of 51. Rich entered eternal life on December 15, 2014 at The Gatehouse at Divine Providence Hospital, then part of Susquehanna Health, which is now UPMC Susquehanna.

In 1931, in the year that Richard J. Saar was born, in March, “The Star Spangled Banner” officially became the national anthem by congressional resolution. Other songs had previously been used - among them, "My Country, 'Tis of Thee", "God Bless America", and "America the Beautiful". There was fierce debate about making "The Star Spangled Banner" the national anthem - Southerners and veterans organizations supported it, pacifists and educators opposed it.

In 1957, Richard was 26 years old when on October 4th, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik I, the first man made earth-orbiting satellite - and triggered the Space Race. Sputnik I was only 23 inches in diameter and had no tracking equipment, only 4 antennas, but it had a big impact.
