    The Argus, Melbourne. November 1903. MURCHISON. Mr. Robert Miller, one of the pioneer farmers of the Goulburn Valley, died on Wednesday evening at his residence, South Murchison. Deceased, who leaves a grown-up family of seven sons and two daughters, was highly respected. The Kilmore Free Press. December 1903. Mr. Robert Miller, who died at Murchison East last week, was a resident of Bylands nearly half a century back. He leaves a grown-up family.

In 1832, in the year that Robert Miller was born, by February 12th, a cholera epidemic in London claimed at least 3,000 lives - it eventually killed 6,536. The epidemic spread to France and North America later in the year. Cholera is spread through contaminated food and water but at the time, it was thought to be spread by a "miasma” - a bad smell - in the air.

In 1844, Robert was just 12 years old when in June and July, the "Great Flood of 1844" occurred on the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers - the largest flood recorded in that area. The population in the area was sparse at the time, though, so the flood didn't have a lot of economic impact. The biggest loss was to the Wyandot Indians - 100 people died from diseases caused by the flood.
