She had siblings Lucy Melinda Blackney, Agnes Bell, Ethel Maud Blackney, George Thomas Blackney, Henry "Harry" Joesph Blackney, and May Cohen Blackney. Sarah West died at age 84 years old on August 13, 1957 in Ashwood, City of Monash County, and was buried at Fawkner Crematorium.

In 1872, in the year that Sarah Ann (Bell) West was born, on May 22nd, President Ulysses S. Grant signed the Amnesty Act of 1872. The Act restored full civil rights to secessionists, including about 150,000 former slaves who had fought in the Confederate Army. About 500 former Confederate sympathizers were not allowed their full civil rights.

In 1916, when she was 44 years old, suffragette Jeannette Pickering Rankin became the first woman elected to the House of Representatives as a Representative at large from Montana. She was the first woman to hold an elected Federal office. Holding the office for two years, she ran again in 1940 and served another two year term. Montana had granted women unrestricted voting rights in 1914, 6 years before women got the vote nationally.
