Sebastiana (Battaglia) Nigro was born in 1861 to Lucia Marchese and Guiseppe Battaglia. She was in a relationship with Giuseppe Nigro, and had children Carmela Troia, Natalizia Garrotto, Nicola Nigro, Louisa Garrotto, Annunziata Inserra Nigro, Venera Inserra Nigro, Frank Nigro, Grace Tribulato, Rose Nigro, and Antonio Nigro. Sebastiana Nigro died at age 85 years old in 1946.

In 1877, when she was 16 years old, on July 14th, strikes and resulting riots began at the Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) Railroad. A sympathy strike and rioting began in Pittsburgh and a worker's rebellion began in St. Louis, then spread to other cities. 100 people were killed before the strikes ended when President Rutherford B. Hayes sent federal troops to each of the cities involved.
