NEWPORT NEWS – Dr. Sharon White-Williams, wife of Anthony W. Williams and a retired professor from Hampton University, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003. Arrangements by Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel.

NEWPORT NEWS – Dr. Sharon White-Williams of Greensboro, North Carolina, and Newport News, Virginia, entered her heavenly home on Thursday, September 18, 2003. Dr. Williams was a full professor of education at Hampton University where she was the recipient of the 2003 Edward L. Hamm, Sr. Distinguished Teaching Award.
Members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated are invited to attend a service which will be held at St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church on Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the Hampton University Memorial Chapel on Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, at twelve o’clock noon followed by the interment at the Hampton University Cemetery.
A native of Elizabeth City, North Carolina, Dr. White-Williams gained her early education in the Elizabeth City Public Schools. Later a resident of Raleigh, North Carolina, she graduated from Ligon High School. Dr. White-Williams received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education with departmental honors from Hampton Institute, initiating an abiding love for her “Home by the Sea” that would span a lifetime. Furthering her education after two years at Central Connecticut State University, she earned the Masters in Science Degree majoring in Reading, Children’s Literature, and Early Childhood Education. Five years later, she received the Doctorate of Education Degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo specializing in Reading Education and Children’s Literature.
Her memberships included numerous professional, civic, and soraral organizations committed to service, leadership and education. Her exemplary services to the community included: founder of the Young Authors Conference to promote reading and writing in thousands of area school children; founding director of the annual Educational Career Fair to match Hampton University students with careers in teaching; and creator and founder of the Literacy Bus in partnership with Hampton Roads Transit to heighten awareness and levels of literacy among non-readers.
Left to grieve her loss and cherish her memory are her beloved daughter, Monique White of Newport News, Virginia; her loving husband, Anthony Williams of Newport News, Virginia; her devoted parents, Drs. Frank and Gladys White of Greensboro, North Carolina; a sister, Attorney Johnese White Gilmette of Dallas, Texas; a nephew and godson, Richard Lee Howard IV, Esq., of Dallas, Texas; and niece, Nicole Hope Howard of Yorktown, Virginia; and innumerable family and friends.
