A grand jury has indicted a Phoenix woman accused of stabbing a disabled man about 50 times before dismembering and burning his body.
Angela Simpson, 23, is charged with first-degree murder of 46 year old Terry Neely.
"The level of cruelty in this case is severe, and we will aggressively prosecute this case," Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas said. "It is a great concern to see victims treated this way and their lives ending this way." The indictment was made Public Thursday. Thomas' office will decide whether to pursue the death penalty against Simpson if she is convicted.
Firefighters in the early-morning hours of August 5 found Neely's remains burning in a trash container behind Covenant of Grace Christian Fellowship Church near Seventh and Peoria Avenues. An autopsy showed injuries that included a 3-inch nail hammered into Neely's skull.
Police said Simpson told them she held Neely for nearly three days, beating him and then dismembering his body. Simpson also said she pulled out his teeth and strangled him with a coaxial cable, police said. Phoenix police Lt. Joe Knott said investigators believe Neely was alive for most of the time he was tortured. Simpson reportedly believed that Neely was "a snitch."
"I don't feel guilty," Simpson said in a jailhouse interview with Channel 3 KTVK. I'm a little upset I won't be able to kill more snitches. I have no remorse about killing him. Simpson also said this was not the first time she had killed someone, a claim Phoenix investigators can't confirm.
