updated November 09, 2020
Theodore Roosevelt Jr., father to 6 children, was born on October 27, 1858 in New York. He was born to Martha Stewart (Bulloch) Roosevelt and Theodore Roosevelt Sr. He married Alice Lee, and they gave birth to Alice Lee (Roosevelt) Longworth. Theodore also married Edith Carow, and they gave birth to Theodore Roosevelt Iii, Kermit Roosevelt, Ethel Roosevelt, Archibald Roosevelt, and Quentin Roosevelt I. He died on January 6, 1919 in New York at age 60.

After President William McKinley was assassinated in September of 1901, 6 months into his second term, Theodore Roosevelt succeeded him to become the 26th President of the United States. A Republican, he is usually ranked as one of the 5 best Presidents. He was awarded the Medal of Honor (he led the Rough Riders in the Spanish American War after resigning as the Asst Secretary of the Navy) and a Nobel Peace Prize in 1906 (for successfully brokering an end to the Russo-Japanese War).

A lifelong naturalist, Roosevelt made conservation a top priority for his administration, and established many new national parks, monuments and forests. He championed the Square Deal set of domestic policies which promised citizens fairness, breaking of trusts, regulation of railroads, and pure food and drugs.

A champion of progressive policies continuing into his 2nd term, he started construction on the Panama Canal and generally focused on Central America in his foreign policies.

After his two first terms, he founded the Bull Moose Party (which called for wide-ranging progressive reforms) and ran again for President in 1912. Splitting the vote, he lost and Democrat Woodrow Wilson won.

In 1858, in the year that Theodore Roosevelt Jr. was born, on January 25th, the "Wedding March" - composed by Felix Mendelssohn - became a popular wedding recessional after being played at the marriage of Queen Victoria's daughter Victoria - eldest child of Victoria and Albert and Princess Royal. Princess Victoria was married to Prince Friedrich of Prussia in St James's Palace, London and as with all things royal in Victorian England, everyone wanted it played at their wedding.

In 1878, he was 20 years old when on September 12th, Cleopatra's Needle, built in Egypt in 1450 B.C. and transported to England, was erected in London. It had arrived in England on January 21st, having been towed by boat.

In 1884, when he was 26 years old, on May 1st, the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions - a US association - first resolved that "eight hours shall constitute a legal day's labour from and after May 1, 1886, and that we recommend to labour organisations throughout this jurisdiction that they so direct their laws as to conform to this resolution by the time named." Previously, workdays would consist of 10 to 16 hours a day - 6 days a week. It would take years before the 8 hour workday became common practice - and longer before it became a law.

In 1906, he was 48 years old when the great San Francisco earthquake hit, estimated at 7.8 on the Richter scale. The earthquake caused fires that raged for days and between the earthquake and the fire, about 3,000 people were killed and 80% of the City was destroyed.

In 1919, in the year of Theodore Roosevelt Jr.'s passing, on January 6th, President Theodore Roosevelt died. Having gone to bed the previous night after being treated for breathing problems, the ex-President died in his sleep from a clot that had traveled to his lungs. He was 60. After a simple service, Roosevelt was buried on a hillside overlooking Oyster Bay.
