Nancy Jane Davis was the only living daughter of Alexander Davis (1815-1900) and Margaret Amelia (Smith) Davis (1822-1901). The parents were born probably in Mississippi and married in 1849. Alexander moved the family to Texas in 1854. Their daughter Nancy Jane was born in Fairfield, Freestone Co, Texas, in 1857. She married Joseph Asbury Rush at Mt Calm, Hill Co, Texas, in 1880 and bore nine children. The youngest died at age five, and at least one son and probably two lived to adulthood. She died in 1928 at age 72, buried with her husband at Mt Calm Cemetery. The town of Mt Calm is at the southern extreme of Hill County, and the cemetery is a short distance away in Limestone Co. Nancy Jane's youngest brother, Thomas Henry Davis, a Methodist minister, in his biography referred to Nancy Jane as one of the two best women he had ever know. The other was their mother, Margaret Amelia.
