Thomas John Corrigan 1864 - 1912

Thomas John Corrigan of Hcote Australia was born on April 7, 1864 in Epsom, Greater Bendigo City County, VIC to Elizabeth (Cleary) Corrigan and Thomas Corrigan. He had siblings Michael Corrigan, Anthony Corrigan, James Corrigan, Bernard Corrigan, and Patrick Corrigan. He married Amelia Louise (Mcintosh) Corrigan in 1906, and had children Thomas Joseph Corrigan and Donald Bernard Corrigan. Thomas Corrigan died at age 48 years old on July 17, 1912 in Melbourne.

In 1864, in the year that Thomas John Corrigan was born, on April 22nd, the Coinage Act of 1864 was passed by Congress. It mandated that "In God We Trust" was to be placed on all United States coins and created a 2 cent coin. Later - in 1956 - "In God We Trust" replaced "E Pluribus Unum" - which means out of many, one - as the national motto.

In 1884, he was 20 years old when on May 1st, the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions - a US association - first resolved that "eight hours shall constitute a legal day's labour from and after May 1, 1886, and that we recommend to labour organisations throughout this jurisdiction that they so direct their laws as to conform to this resolution by the time named." Previously, workdays would consist of 10 to 16 hours a day - 6 days a week. It would take years before the 8 hour workday became common practice - and longer before it became a law.
