  • Introduction

The Hawthorn, Kew and Camberwell Citizen. - 3Oth October 1914. OLD RESIDENT PASSES. We regret to announce the death of Mr. Thomas Retchford, which took place last week at Kew. For many years the deceased gentleman was a well-known resident of Richmond; subsequently he came to Burwood road, Hawthorn, and when Mr. J. L. Nettle disposed of his estate agency at Kew he was found to be the purchaser. Assisted by his son, Mr. Percy Retchford, the business extended and became a household word in Kew. Almost up to the last, the deceased took an interest in all that was going on, though 81 years of age. He was a prominent member of the Methodist Church.

In 1833, in the year that Thomas Retchford was born, on August 12th, Chicago was incorporated as a town at the estuary of the Chicago River by 350 settlers. Chicago’s first permanent resident was a trader named Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, a free black man -perhaps from Haiti - who went there in the late 1770s. At first, it was simply a trading post but it grew quickly, going from trading post to town to city in 1837.

Both territories allowed slavery but it caused contention within the territories.
