Thurman Perry was born to parents John Allen Perry and Sarah Jane Huls. His mother Sarah was born in December of 1852 in Indiana and grew up in Spencer, Hamilton, Ohio and Jennings, Scott, Indiana, USA. She married John in 1871 in Indiana and the couple had five children together. She passed away on June 8, 1904 in Jennings, Scott, Indiana, USA. His father John was born on May 17, 1848 in Kentucky and grew up in Henry, Kentucky, USA and Jennings, Scott, Indiana. He married Sarah in 1871 and after having 5 children together, he later re married to Esther Belle Perry (1857–1914) on November 27, 1877 in Washington County, Indiana, USA. He lived in Jennings, Scott, Indiana, USA and passed away in Marion, Jennings, Indiana, USA on December 22, 1920.

Thurman had siblings George Perry (1873-1935), Minnie Perry (1877-1908), Retta H Perry (1884-1941), and Claude Perry (1886-1943). He completed a grammar school education.
