Birdie Mae Young is the daughter of Samuel Martin Young and Amanda "Mandy" Victoria Stewart. Her mother Mandy was born on May 29, 1855 in Camden, Madison, Mississippi, United States and grew up in Madison, Mississippi. She married Samuel on December 24, 1873 in Camden, MS. The couple later moved to Texas resided in Childress, Texas, USA and Houston, Harris, Texas, USA. She passed away in Houston, TX on January 30, 1940. Her father Samuel was born on August 13, 1854 in Jackson, Rankin, Mississippi, United States and grew up in Tishomingo, Mississippi. He and his wife later moved to Childress, Texas, USA where he worked as a farmer. He passed away on November 9, 1930 in Houston, Texas.

Birdie grew up in a large family with siblings including Eulalee Victoria Young (1874-1944), Martha Ellen Young (1876-1950), Martha Ellen Stidham (1876-1950), Walter M Young (1877-1951), William W. Young (1881-), James D Young (1882-), Samuel Lee Young (1882-1953), Maggie Young (1884-1954), Roxie Ollie Young (1886-1954), Thomas Jefferson Young (1888-1949), Clayborn J Young (1889-1969), Hal Edward Young (1891-1952), Burleson B Young (1895-1954), Elmer William Young (1897-1952), and Louella Young (1899-1985). She completed her education through the 7th grade.

On October 11, 1909 she married Thurman Perry (1889–1965) in Scott County, Indiana. Together the couple had children including John William Perry (1910-1985), Mildred Elnora Perry (1912-1912), Dorothy Mae Perry (1913-1992), Henry Leroy Perry (1916-1981), Thelma Louise Perry (1917-1995), Effie Perry (1921-2013), Delbert Thurman Perry (1922-2006), Albert Perry (1924-1939), Mary Elizabeth Perry (1925-2001), Monice Perry (1927-2016), Marian Alice Perry (1929-), Annabelle Perry (1932-2001), and Kenneth Dale Perry (1933-2017).
