She had siblings Albert Edgar Cocks, Harvey Cocks, Dorothy Cocks, Edith Amy Wirth, and Francis Ernest Cocks. She married Norman Stanley Michael, and had children Norma Michael Moore, Joan Michael Wingrave, and Thora Michael. Vera Michael died at age 85 years old on October 3, 1976 in Bendigo, Greater Bendigo City County, VIC.

In 1890, in the year that Vera Cocks Michael was born, on December 29th, the Wounded Knee Massacre occurred in South Dakota on the Lakota Pine Ridge Indian Reservation . The U.S. 7th Cavalry Regiment said that they rode into the Lakota camp "trying to disarm" the inhabitants. One person, Black Coyote - who was deaf - held onto his rifle, saying that he paid a lot of money for it. Shots rang out and by the end at least 153 Lakota Sioux - some estimates say 300 - and 25 troops had died. The site of the massacre is a National Historic Landmark.

In 1918, when she was 28 years old, on November 1, an elevated train on the Brooklyn line of the subway - driven by an inexperienced operator because of a strike - tried to navigate a turn at 30mph. The limit on the curve was 6 mph. The 2nd and 3rd cars of the 5 car wooden train were badly damaged and at least 93 people were killed, making it the deadliest crash in New York subway history.
