Sara Lobato:
My father worked there in the 1930s - My father, Emmanuel J. Lobato, was born in Alamosa. He tended cattle at 12 and when he was five he took care of one cow or bull that used to get lose. He earned $1 a month, and when it got lose he had to pay $1, which happened a number of times.
He worked at the hardware store when he was about 18 years old. He was born December 31, 1918, and his family came from Spain about 400-500 years earlier and married the Martinez family. I actually lived in Pueblo West years ago and a young man came to my door who looked like my nephew. I almost died. He was a Martinez.
The story I was told by my oldest brother who is 80 years old, said that my father worked very hard for Mr. Husung. Mr. Husung had hopes that one day my father would manage the store, but my father had higher dreams than staying in Alamosa.
He went to the Naval Academy, became a Lt. Commander, was in over 30 major battles, and 13 battle stars, and went on to become one of the top international attorneys in the world.
He visited Alamosa a number of times during and after the war. I have no idea if he visited the store and said hello to Mr. Husung, but since I do things like that and take after him in many ways, I would like to think that he did at least one time. He was written up in the local paper since he had many accomplishments in the navy.
I like to think that Mr. Husung most likely read about him.
Carolyn Davidson:
Patricia (PattiPooh) was my sweet baby sister! - I held baby Patti when she was born. I was 13 years old at the time. About eighteen months earlier my younger sister, Becky, had been born. The two of them were best buddies. I would sit on the floor and let the girls divide my hair in half and they each got to put in curlers, bows and barrettes. I looked so silly, but they were entertained while mom fixed dinner. Lol
Jo-Ann Wisniewski:
Memories - My grandmother 🥰:). German food…still the best I’ve ever had! Gram’s desserts… especially her raspberry turnovers and cinnamon/sugar swirls with leftover dough…chocolate chip cookies and rum balls at Christmas! Playing cards at night… and the song while getting our tea and treats ready…” I love coffee, I love tea… I love Jo-Ann and she loves me!”
🥰🙏🥰
Dennis Mulqueen:
Cousin Phil Duris - Phil or Felipe as I used to call him, was an amazing guy with a huge heart. He was funny, compassionate, extremely intelligent (which meant he always had a lot of interesting things to say) a great chess player and not so great ping pong and tennis player 😂 but above all an extremely loyal friend, which everything combined made him my favorite cousin of all time. He was also an accomplished writer and poet, and above all he was an inspirational guy having lived through the tragic early deaths of both of his parents. I think of him often and will miss him forever. The love of God and my love is with you always Brother, and we will meet again may The Good Lord continue to hold you in the palm of his hand. 🙏

Theresa Hines:
Amanda was my stepmother. - My stepmother taught me how to make wonton, introduced me to "thousand-year-old duck eggs', and gave me a yellow satin chongsum. We moved to Miami Beach from El Paso, and I remember spending days at the beach where guys would try to flirt with us because she was so pretty and looked so young they thought we were friends rather than mother and daughter! I wish I'd had more time with her, and knew more about her family in Hong Kong.
Raymond Gully:
Ancient Indeed - Jimmy Fuoto,....he was a good man beneath a lot of brokeness. Werent we all? We gathered to medicate and commiserate ...and bury the brokeness each weekend....until the medication turned on us and began to bury us....It buried Jim, along with others in our gathering and I remember them always.
The tragedy is that there was such talent and promise. What coulda been! There were instances of clarity, of direction, but the hammer of procrastination, wielded by fear would cast off any reason in that same instance. Youre missed Jim, by more than you probably ever knew.
Margaret Egan:
Arrena was my Aunt - I grew up with Aunt Rena from when I was an infant. She helped raise and care for me. I loved her completely. She struggled and feared things, but she was a caring, simple person with a pure heart and a great sense of humor. She had polio when she was very young and was unable to run or drive a car, but she lived mostly independently and was an important member of our little family.
Tracy Duff:
Acknowledgment - Willis Middleton was my grandmother's husband. She raised me to know this man as my grandfather. I will always have a most special place in my heart for this man. His kindness and generosity were unmatched. His loyalty and admiration toward my grandmother, Viola (Vokie) Middleton, is matched only by her unwavering dedication she still has toward him, Jesus, and familial affection.
