    Virgil Lee Howell is the son of Lorenzo Dow Howell Jr. (1896-1963) and Aretta McCree (1900-1970). He was born in Williamson County, Illinois, USA on December 19, 1931. Virgil grew up with siblings including Robert Howell (1920-), Lelia Juanita Howell (1921-2009), and Mary Katherine Howell (1924-2010). He grew up in Blairsville, Williamson, Illinois and was a 1949 graduate of the Williamson County School System. Private First Class Howell served in Company A, 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division during the Korean War. He displayed remarkable resilience, returning to duty just eighteen days after being seriously wounded by the enemy on September 1, 1951. Tragically, he was Killed in Action on September 28, 1951, while bravely fighting the enemy in North Korea. Despite his ultimate sacrifice, his remains were never recovered. For his valor and dedication to duty, Private First Class Howell was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal. His service and sacrifice in the Korean War stand as a testament to his courage and commitment to his country.
