  • Professional Career

Herr Tradowsky was a "schauspieler" (or actor) in Germany, believed to have been active in and around Berlin. Too young for WWI (The Great War) and not conscripted until the final throes of WWII, Walter never told me if he continued during those days as an actor or some other profession. In the final days, he was drafted into the "Volksturm," handed a Panzerfaust and a Stahlhelm that came below his eyes. He stated that one day he looked up out of the bunker to which he was assigned, only to find the war was over. He became a dolmetscher (interpreter) for the American forces and ultimately came to the United States, teaching the German language to the American military at the Verteidigungs Spracheninstitut (West Kuste) -- the Defense Language Institute, West Coast-- in Monterey, California. His son became a local dentist, Herr Tradowsky was a consummate teacher, a pleasure in the classroom, and had a joie de vivre that was pleasing to every student, myself included. I was in his classes during 1968 and gained total resect for him. Requiescat in Pace, Walter.
