On February 12, 1927 he married Sue Elizabeth Penix (1906–1990) in Lester, Craighead, Arkansas, USA and the couple resided in Lake City, Craighead, Arkansas. They had children together including: Maudene Edney (1923-2003), Mildred Maxine Edney (1927-2007), and Billie Rose Edney (1929-2003). He registered for the draft on October 16, 1940, in Wilmington, Los Angeles, California, as part of the Selective Service Act during World War II. At the time of his draft registration, William was employed by Charles W Danan. William enlisted in the United States Army on September 9, 1942, in Los Angeles, California.
