William Hulbert Edney 1892 - 1967

William Hulbert Edney of Prahran, City of Stonnington County, VIC Australia was born in 1892 in Brighton, City of Bayside County to William Richard Edney and Elizabeth Hulbert Edney. He had a sister Ethel Blanche Edney. He married Agnes Irene Paternoster in 1916, and had children Dory Irene Edney and Lillian Ethel Edney. William Edney died at age 75 years old in 1967 in Prahran.

In 1892, in the year that William Hulbert Edney was born, on October 12th, the "Pledge of Allegiance" was first recited in unison by students in U.S. public schools. Composed the previous August by Francis Bellamy, it was to be recited in 15 seconds and originally read: "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." "Under God" was added in the 1950's.

In 1903, at the age of only 11 years old, William was alive when the United States Department of Commerce and Labor was created by President Theodore Roosevelt to control the excesses of big business. Renamed the Department of Commerce 10 years later, many departments concerned with workers were transferred to the Department of Labor at that time. Another spin-off, the Bureau of Corporations, became the Federal Trade Commission.
