His father was born in Kent, England and his mother was born in Devon, England. William had seven younger siblings: Alfred (1859 - 1860), Emlyn (1861 - 1944), Minnie (1863 - 1944), Jane (1865 - 1925), Annie (1867 - 1946), Etty, 1869 - 1916), and George (1876 - 1905). All of his siblings were born in Australia. William married twice, the first time to Matilda "Tillie" Elizabeth Jamison (1864 - 1903) in 1890. They had two daughters, Eileen (1892 - 1966) and Vera (1893 - 1976). After Matilda died, William married Catherine Theresa Girdlestone in 1908.
