    My father was one of three children, Jack who was older and Tony who was born in 1916. His mother Mary died of influenza in 1918, I think. His father, also called William, remarried and had I think, further 10 children maybe more. They lived in the Farnborough, Hampshire, area. The document at the beginning, says that my father was an only child, but he had two full brothers.

Previously the Governor of New Jersey and President of Princeton University, he was the first Southerner to serve as President since Zachary Taylor, over 60 years previous. A Democrat, he led the U.S. during World War I and championed the League of Nations.

In 1923, William was only 10 years old when the Teapot Dome scandal became the subject of an investigation by Senator Walsh and severely damaged the reputation of the Harding administration. Secretary of the Interior Albert Bacon Fall was convicted of accepting bribes from oil companies and became the first Cabinet member to go to prison. At the time, the Teapot Dome scandal was seen as "greatest and most sensational scandal in the history of American politics".
